A NEW crossing has been installed on a busy road following complaints that it could be difficult to cross.
Durham County Council added a new traffic island and dropped kerbs to Picktree Lane, Chester-le-Street to help pedestrians cross the road.
The installation follows concerns for residents who have reported difficulties crossing the road, which links the A167 with Chester-le-Street marketplace.
Councillor Carl Marshall, cabinet member for economic regeneration, including transport, said: “Residents told us that they found it difficult to cross the road when traffic is heavy and we’ve made these changes in response.
“The new crossing is a key addition which will improve the safety of all road users in the area during busy periods by providing a protected refuge in the centre of the road.”
A bus stand on the road has also been re-located away from a busy roundabout as part of the safety improvements.
