A CHARITY volunteer has celebrated her 70th birthday by jumping out of a plane.

Maggie Taylor, from Hett, near Durham, did the skydive to raise money for McMillan Cancer Support, where she volunteers.

The 69-year-old, who wanted to do it to celebrate her 70th birthday, which takes place next month, said: "It was a wonderful experience, everyone should do it.

"The views were incredible."

Maggie Taylor did the skydive for Macmillan Cancer Support to celebrate her 70th birthday

She raised £1,475, which has now been handed over to the charity, which has information centres at the University Hospital of North Durham, in Durham city, as well as in Bishop Auckland, Chester-le-Street, Darlington and Shotley Bridge.

The grandmother, who volunteers at the Durham centre every week, added: "I love it, it's so rewarding.

"We get patients who come in at all stages of cancer and we do whatever we can so if people need help with anything from money to walking the dog we can signpost them in the right direction.

"Sometimes people are just upset and want to sit down with a cup of tea and to talk."

Michelle Muir, a McMillan fundraiser, said: "I think Maggie is just amazing, for being so brave doing this sky dive. Helping people affected by cancer."

"The money Maggie has raised will fund a Macmillan Nurse for five days, which is incredible. Macmillan solely reply on people like Maggie to fundraise for us as we are not government funded."
