COMMUNITY lunch clubs for older people who want to get together over a meal have been launched in Chester-le-Street.

Age UK County Durham delivers a wide variety of clubs, activities and services, and information and advice to provide local support to people, their families and carers.

Now the charity has started new monthly meetings to give people the chance to socialise and enjoy some traditional home cooked food.

A lunch club is held on the third Thursday of the month at the town’s Cricket Club in Ropery Lane, Chester le Street at 12pm. A two-course meal costs £7, 50p extra for tea or coffee.

Two small and friendly lunch clubs have also been launched.

One takes place at 1pm on the first Wednesday of the month in the stylish restaurant at The Elms retirement complex in Chester-le-Street.

A freshly cooked two-course meal in good company is £6 per person.

Another takes place in the comfortable lounge of Boulmer Court, Newker Crescent in Chester-le-Street on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 12.30pm. A two-course meal in good company costs just £4.50 per person.

Development manager Chris Fletcher said: “Priority is given to older people who are lonely or at risk of loneliness. Older carers or those who care for older people are welcome to come together.

“The Age UK County Durham Development Worker Emma Whitelock will welcome everyone at the lunch clubs and be on hand to ensure all have a lovely time.”
