HOLIDAY camps for school children held at a sports centre following a major upgrade have been hailed a success.

Over 700 children aged four and up enjoyed fun and active summer camps run by Durham University.

The university has run the sessions for local young people for the past seven years, and this year’s participants were among the first visitors to enjoy new the facilities at the upgraded Sports and Wellbeing Park.

Young people could choose from differently themed camps: mini and multi sports, dance and drama, cricket, adventure, rowing, and tennis.

Many of the indoor activities took place in a new sports hall built as part of the £32 million investment in its facilities at Maiden Castle, near Durham City.

The next holiday camps will be held during the October half-term holidays.
