A £2M sewage investment programme is due to get underway next month.

Northumbrian Water is carrying out the 12-month programme in Durham to reduce the flood risk and protect the environment.

New sewers will be built in Elvet Waterside, Old Elvet and Whinney Hill.

Project manager, David Groark, said: "This is an important project for us, in terms of protecting customers' homes and the environment.

"It's great that we have had the opportunity ahead of the project to liaise with Durham County Council and with Durham University, so that we can co-ordinate work to minimise the impact upon customers in the area.

"We will be keeping information points such as our online community portal up to date, as well as letting customers know about timings of the temporary roadworks, but, as always, we are happy for people to get in touch if they would like to know more about this project."

Work starts on Monday, September 9 and is expected to take about 12 months.

In order to carry out the work safely, temporary traffic lights will be put in place along Old Elvet and Whinney Hill for the duration of the work.

There will also be closures of sections of Elvet Waterside, close to Baths Bridge, and at Elvet Bridge.

The details of those closures will be released closed to the time.
