A VILLAGE football club has helped to raise more than £400 for a charity supporting young people’s mental health after hosting a charity match.

Brandon United Football Club was working with the National Citizenship Service (NCS) to put on the event at its home ground at Brandon Welfare Ground.

The club is trying to put on more events in a bid to make it a hub of the community.

The charity match was organised by the NCS programme and featured two teams of young people from the organisation.

Brandon United allowed NCS to use the ground free of charge.

The event raised more than £400 for charity Young Minds, a mental health charity.

Will Blacklock, the club’s community manager, said: “It went really well.

"Our aim is to support the area, and this is a great way of doing just that.

"Getting behind local lads for an amazing cause is a great first step in our goal.

"We're keen to make a good start in getting people involved again and we saw a lot of old faces at the charity match which was what we wanted."

Brandon FC's new committee is planning a number of events in coming months to try and attract people back to the ground.

Mr Blacklock added: "My ultimate aim is to get everyone in Brandon back to the club, whether its related to football or not."
