TRIBUTES have been paid following the death of a respected headteacher.

Ezriel Salomon, who had cancer, was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, and died on Saturday aged 76 from complications caused by pneumonia.

Mr Salomon was a founder member of the Gateshead Interfaith forum, and his work in the community was recognised in 2010 when he was awarded an MBE. A year later, he was made a Freeman by Gateshead Council.

He was head teacher of Gateshead Jewish Primary School for 35 years, and was instrumental in setting up Haskel, a charity providing support to children with special needs and disabilities. He also helped establish the Labriut Healthy Living Centre, and the Jewish Community Council of Gateshead.

Marting Gannon, leader of Gateshead Council, said: β€œIn a life devoted to the community, Ezriel Salomon made an immense contribution to the life of Gateshead, both as an advocate and an ambassador for the borough. I am deeply saddened. He was a true friend of Gateshead.”
