PUPILS from a primary school in County Durham have created a time capsule for future generations to find.

Containing children's favourite memories and items relating to recent events, the time capsule was placed in a wall at Sherburn Primary School, which is being renovated.

Durham County Could is replacing sections of the outer wall of the building and providing new windows and doors, providing an opportunity to place a time capsule to capture a snapshot of life in 2019.

It includes snippets written by the children, a school brochure, a lunch menu, a copy of the Northern Echo, passes from the Cricket World Cup match between England and New Zealand, played in Chester-le-Street, and a poster from the Durham Miners' Gala.

Headteacher Sue Cornforth said: “The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed writing about themselves, their hobbies and interests.

“We have been extremely lucky to have had support with our project from members of the local community. We would like to say a special thank you to the Bishop of Durham, Durham County Council Chairman and the Mayor of Durham, Cllr Katie Corrigan, and Roberta Blackman-Woods, our MP, who all wrote inspiring letters.

“We hope future pupils and their parents will someday enjoy looking through the time capsule and it will provide them with a snapshot of school life in 2019.”

Cllr Olwyn Gunn, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for children and young people’s service, said: “These building improvements, made by our building and facilities maintenance service, show we are continuing to invest in our schools to ensure we provide the best possible education for children in County Durham.”
