CHILDREN have been given commemorative bears knitted by women from the community to mark their school's final day.

Bowburn Infants and Nursery School, in County Durham, is merging with Bowburn Juniors to form Bowburn Junior School in September, though it will remain on its current site until a new building is built.

The Northern Echo:

Some of the commemorative bears made by members of the knit and natter group in Bowburn

To mark the occasion, every child was given a bear, which were made by the village's knit and natter group which meets weekly at Bowburn Library.

The group has made more than 200 of the bears, which wear a banner with the dates 1908-2019, since January.

Jan Blakey, deputy chair of governors and knitter, helped hand out the bears to pupils and staff. She said: "It was lovely. It was a very emotional day."

Plans have been submitted for a new Bowburn Primary School building, which if approved would be built at Surtees Avenue, next to the existing junior school.
