A HOUSING project which is tackling homelessness has created a garden so its residents can eat home-grown fruit and vegetables.

Durham Action on Single Housing (DASH) worked with Edible Gilesgate, which supports people's wellbeing through activities around food, and Houghall Horticultural Society to plant fruit bushes, vegetables and herbs at its headquarters at Hudson House, in Gilesgate, Durham.

They also had hep from Gilesgate-based community interest company The Wood Pile, which made the planters using recycled timber.

Trevor Atkinson, from DASH, said: “Gardening is a great way for our residents to enjoy fresh air and exercise, and apply themselves to a project which they can enjoy.

“It will also be great to see fruit and vegetables growing around our building – and enjoy the food when it’s ready.

“We’re grateful to everyone who has helped us create our edible garden, and we’re looking forward to a tasty harvest.”
