INDEPENDENT traders in Durham are teaming up to try and get more people shopping in the city centre.

They are hoping to cash in on the US's Independence Day with a range of offers, deals and discounts aimed at tempting people into the city to support local businesses.

The initiative is being organised by Durham's Businesss Improvement District (BID) and Durham Markets and runs from July 1-7.

Adam Deathe, business engagement manager at the BID, said: “Nowhere in the world will you find Tango, The House of Gentlemen, Moon Jewellery or Sirens Health and Beauty – only here in Durham.

"It’s these types of business we want to celebrate during Independents InDurham, helping to shine a light on these often hidden gems of the city, and encourage people to come and pay them a visit during the event and beyond.

"From quaint tea rooms to high-end fashion, personal training to professional mortgage advice, there’s a whole breadth and depth to the independent offer in the city.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets, said: “When we support local independent businesses, everyone benefits because the money circulates in the local economy.

"Take a few minutes to chat as our traders know all about what they’re selling, and all about the city of Durham too. They’re a source of great value shopping, wonderful advice and enjoyable banter.”

Participating businesses will be running different offers throughout the week.
