A CITY centre main road is set to be revitalised with a deep clean and treatment.

The City of Durham Parish Council has approved a proposal by its environment committee to carry out the work in North Road in a bid to give the area a much-needed boost.

The council’s has been working closely with Durham County Council’s Clean and Green team to assess what actions the it may be able to take to further enhance the cleanliness and appearance of areas in the area.

As part of this work, North Road was identified as having a significant issue in terms of pavement cleanliness and in particular there is an issue of chewing gum engrained into the pavement.

With a new large premises having recently been granted a license as a night clubs, the Environment Committee felt that the issues of littering and chewing gum on North Road would only be exacerbated.

The work on North Road is due to begin mid-June and will take approximately a week to complete, with the selected company working overnight to ensure minimal disruption to pedestrians and to local traders.

The work will involve an intensive deep clean to remove all aspects of everyday dirt and grime, a further treatment with specialist cleaning products to draw out stubborn stains such as ingrained oils and fats and finally the application of a non-toxic, water based Pro-Guard Plus protective coating in a single saturated treatment.

The proposed area to be cleaned and treated on North Road starts at Nevilles Street and comes down to the North Road end of Framwellgate Bridge and includes both sides of the pavement.

Parish council environment committee chair Councillor Victoria Ashfield said: “When the people of this city asked for a parish council, they made it clear they wanted their voices to be heard.

"We have listened to their request for a cleaner and healthier city and I am thrilled that the parish council has agreed to fund this project. Many streets in the city are a health hazard and littering, stains and chewing gum are a real eyesore.

"This now means that a specialist cleaning company will carry out an in-depth clean of North Road followed by an environmentally-friendly treatment of the pavement so that future cleaning will be quick, easy and much cheaper.”
