PERMISSION has been granted for the conversion of a former council garage to allow the hire and sale of vehicles, along with the sale of parts and accessories.

Durham County Council has approved the proposals for the premises off Newcastle Road, in Chester-le-Street.

The single brick built garage was previously used to store and service the council’s mobile library vehicle.

Access to the premises will be from the front street and along the front of the magistrates’ court.

The facility will only be allowed to operate from 8am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday and from 9am to 2pm on Sundays and the bank holidays.

The applicant, Alan Bell, said the majority of sales will be by mail order, with no fixed machinery installed or used at the garage for servicing, repair or maintenance.
