HUGE queues formed outside a fish and chip shop in the region as people stood in line for a traditional Good Friday supper.

This line formed outside Colmans Fish and Chips shop in South Shields, which is famous in the region for its cod and chips and is used to the Good Friday rush.

Some customers were reported to have waited for more than an hour outside the shop in Ocean Road to get their hands on a portion.

Eating fish on a Friday stems from the Christian tradition of not eating meat on that day.

While many people nowadays do eat meat on Fridays, the custom of eating fish is still commonly upheld by non-believers on Good Friday.
