A CHARITY has been helping out to carry out repairs at accommodation for former members of the armed services.

Single Homeless Action Initiative in Durham (SHAID) runs St Peter's Court, in Sacriston, which offers a place to live for former armed services personnel.

The Screwfix Foundation has given £3,999 worth of funding to the charity so it can carry out work to turn a recently purchased care home into 15 flats and put in new radiators.

SHAID project manager Tony Hammond said: "We are very grateful to The Screwfix Foundation for donating these much-needed funds to support our charity.

"We’d like to thank everyone who was involved in the fundraising – it’s been a great help to us.”

Mark Dover, store manager of the Durham Screwfix store, added:: “We’re really pleased that one of our local charities has been awarded funding by The Screwfix Foundation.

"Staff from across the business have held a variety of fundraising events to raise vital funds for The Screwfix Foundation, so it’s fantastic to see the money we have raised being invested back into such a worthwhile community project.”
