A COUPLE have danced their way to pick up their own version of the glitterball trophy.

Michael and Michelle Anderson, from Ouston, near Chester-le-Street, were crowned champions at a Strictly inspired dance competition organised to raise money for St Cuthbert’s Hospice.

Their fast-paced and fun-filled Charleston was performed to Paolo Nutini’s Pencil Full of Lead.

Accountant Michelle said: “Michael signed us up as a bit of a dare. He surprised me just before Christmas and told me what he had done.

The Northern Echo:

“If I’m completely honest I didn’t realise it was a competition at first. I’m absolutely shell socked we have actually won. It’s all been for such a great cause and loads of fun. I’m chuffed that we’ve finally got to dance too as I really didn’t think Michael would.”

More than 300 people attended the grand finale event, which is expected to raise more than £16,500 for the Durham-based charity.

Ten couples from the region competed in the event and received eight weeks free training from The Dudman Academy of Performing Arts in Fenham and Applegarth Academy of Dance West Cornforth ahead of Saturday night’s finale.

Jade McArdle Senior Community & Events Fundraiser said: “This is the fourth year we have held this event and each year it just gets better and better. The couples have really given their all and we were so impressed by all who took part in the Grand Finale. Thank you to all who danced and all who helped to raise such a huge amount for St Cuthbert’s.”
