A PROGRAMME of events to celebrate St Cuthbert’s Day are being held at Durham Cathedral.

They include special services, storytelling and markets as well as performances and processions.

On the saint’s day itself, Wednesday March 20, there will be St Cuthbert’s Day Evensong and Procession at 7pm, which includes the blessing of the light and the offering of incense, before a procession to the Shrine of St Cuthbert, where the choir will sing John Tavener’s work, Ikon of St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne.

Cathedral spokeswoman Kate Pawley said: “For centuries, the city of Durham has been marking the pilgrimage undertaken by the monks of Lindisfarne and the subsequent arrival of the relics and body of St Cuthbert to Durham in 995AD, and 2019 is no exception.

“The annual feast day of the north of England’s much-loved saint is upon us, with a rich programme of special services and events running between Wednesday, March 20 and Saturday, March 23, offering a variety of ways to celebrate.”
