FORMER servicemen enjoyed special Christmas treats courtesy of kind-hearted people in their community.
Seventeen former military men tucked into a turkey dinner with all the trimmings and received presents before the big day itself.
The tenants, many of whom have PTSD, live together in the supported accommodation at St Peter’s Court in Sacriston.
Dawn Winn, 49, who lives nearby has been collecting gifts, toiletries, clothes and money for the men.
Ms Winn, who works as a prison custody officer at Durham Crown Court, said: “I put a plea out on Facebook and it has absolutely catapulted.
“It has been blown out of the water. People have donated all sorts of thing. The response has been amazing.”
The meal was provided free-of-charge by Ms Winn’s friend, Craig Archer, owner of The Moorings, at Pelton Fell, near Chester-le-Street.
He said: “They are war veterans so we wanted to help. It is nice for us to be able to give something back.”
