A CHOIR is going on tour after supporters raised more than £5,000 to pay for its travelling costs.

The Stories of Sanctuary choir, which is made up of people from County Durham and Syrian refugees who have resettled in the area, has created an album as part of the song-writing project.

The Durham-based music project, which taps into the city’s history of providing sanctuary to people in need and aims to engage audiences with stories of fleeing war, will now be travelling to five locations across the UK to put on performances.

The crowdfunding campaign, which started in December, will remain open until Friday, January 4, with any further funds going towards running songwriting sessions with local organisations to bring local communities together and to offer training to young people involved in the project.

As well as producing an album, the choir has performed concerts at Durham Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament and will also be singing in venues around the North-East in March, with possible locations including Newton Aycliffe, South Shields and Stockton.
