A NEW retail park on a former factory site is set for approval.

Planners at Durham County Council have recommended the proposal to build new units on the former Kerry Foods Factory in Gilesgate, Durham, be approved.

Angel Developments have put forward the plans to build three units at St Andrews Park, in Dragon Lane, with a 234-space car park.

Concerns have been raised about increased traffic and if the scheme goes ahead, it has been recommended the developers should contribute £137,500 towards a retail park relief road, between Rennys Lane and the A181 via Damson Way.

The council has some funding for the road, but there is a £500,000 shortfall which it hopes will be met by developers.

Another development is underway to build a Lidl and The Range on a site opposite Tesco Extra while plans are in the pipeline for the former Mono Containers site.

There are also plans for a McDonald's drive thru restaurant at St Andrews Park.

Councillors will decide on the plans at a meeting at County Hall today.
