A NORTH-East university has paid out almost £30,000 through a new fund set up to support charities in the region.
The Durham University Community Fund was launched in October 2017 to provide grants to charities and non-profit organisations already supported by staff and students through volunteering.
Thirteen charities shared the £28,230.84 raised, each receiving an equal share of £2,171.60.
Vice-chancellor Professor Stuart Corbridge said: “I am amazed and humbled by the dedication of our staff and students to a huge range of charities and good causes.
“It is our pleasure to support their efforts, by developing volunteering opportunities and allowing staff to volunteer for up to five days a year in work time.
“The Durham University Community Fund has allowed us to extend that support, as well as make a direct contribution.”
Among the charities to benefit are SHAID, which will be able to refurbish its supported accommodation for former armed service personnel in Sacriston, Coxhoe-based Stray Aid, which will upgrade the heating at its kennels and Durham Foodbank.
