A MOVEMENT aimed at reforming the European Union is holding an event to coincide with others across the continent.

The event in Newcastle is part of the Democracy in Europe Movement 25 (DiEM 25), which was set up by former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis.

On Saturday, a short manifesto of the movement will be read out, proclaiming a “new European republic” and calling on the EU Council to be de-commissioned and its powers passed to the European Parliament.

It takes place at the same time as meetings planned for across Europe.

The movement is aimed at fundamentally changing EU institutions to make them transparent and accountable to European citizens.

The meeting, organised by the European Balcony Project, takes place at 3.30pm on the second floor of Good Space, Commercial Union House, in Pilgrim Street.

Anyone who is interested in discussing the movement or in finding out more about it is welcome to attend.
