A CHURCH is opening its doors for a festival of remembrance this week.

The event at St Mary’s Church, in Sherburn Village, is being launched on Wednesday with a concert, starting at 7.30pm, which features local choir Voices Together.

The church will be decorated with poppies and First World War memorabilia, which have been donated for the occasion by members of the community, and include medals and war poems.

There will also be a displays to other nations who lost their lives in the conflict, the women of the First World War and horses and other animals.

The church is taking part in the Armed Forces Communities programme, and will have21 silhouettes of soldiers, part of the “There but not there” project to remember the dead.

The church will be open between 10am and 4pm from Thursday, November 8, until Saturday, November 10 and on Remembrance Sunday between 12noon and 4pm.
