CCTV cameras have been installed at some of Sunderland’s anti-social behaviour hotspots as police and partners respond to concerns raised by residents.

Police and Sunderland City Council have been speaking with those living and working across the city about crime, anti-social behaviour and environmental issues affecting their communities.

As a result, the council’s north area committee has funded the £30,000 installation of four new mobile surveillance cameras which can be moved to any potential areas of concern to help police locate offenders and review any incidents of note.

The 4G cameras are fitted with the latest technology to beam high-definition images back to the council’s CCTV control suite, which police can currently use to study late-night flashpoints.

The cameras have initially been deployed within areas of Roker, Seaburn, Southwick and Downhill as officers and partners look to clamp down on anti-social behaviour.

Inspector Don Wade, of Northumbria Police, said: “These cameras offer great flexibility in that they can be moved to any area where crime is reported and issues arise.”
