A COMMUNITY action scheme tackling environmental and housing issues is returning to Easington Colliery

The Durham County Council-led scheme will be taking in Wembley, Canada and what are known as the A and B streets, building on previous projects delivered through the scheme in those areas.

It is led by the council’s community action team (CAT) and is joined by Durham Constabulary, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service and other partners.

The scheme will run for 11 weeks with the first two seeing the team speaking to local people to identify priorities for work.

A strategy will be developed with partners prior to seven weeks of work on those projects which have been identified.

In this period there will be weekly walkabouts and the team will host meetings for members of the community.

These will take place Thursdays October 25 and November 29, from 10.30am to 11.30am at Easington Colliery Library, on Fridays November 9 and December 7, from 10.30am to 11.30am at Easington Colliery Welfare Centre, pm Wednesday November 14, from 4pm to 5pm at Easington Parish Hall and on Thursday November 22, from 12pm to 1pm at Café Together Easington Colliery Methodist Church.

A walkabout on Thursday 15 November can be joined by residents and business people. They should meet outside Easington Colliery Welfare Centre at 10.30am.

Once the projects have been delivered there will be two weeks of reviewing the work carried out and providing feedback.

Michael Yeadon, the council’s environment and health protection manager, said: “We’re glad to be back at Easington Colliery and looking forward to undertaking our biggest ever project which we hope will really enhance the local environment.

“I would encourage residents and businesses with any issues relating to the environment or housing to come along to the sessions and tell us about them, so we can consider how they might be addressed.”
