A STORE has been presented with an award for an internship programme for young people with special needs.

Project Choice, a work experience pathway for students with learning disabilities, difficulties and autism has given official recognition to M&S Arnison, near Durham.

Three students spent 12 weeks working their over the summer in the M&S Café, foodhall and in the clothing and home departments.

By building communication skills through interactions with customers, the interns were able to learn more about the practical skills needed in a retail environment.

Store manager Ann Graham said: “It was really rewarding to see them gain confidence during their time with us and get first-hand experience of the retail industry.

“We are eager to continue this partnership and can’t wait for the new intake of interns in September.”

Run by NHS Health Education England, Project Choice offers young people, aged 16-24 with learning and physical disabilities, and supported workplace internships as part of a year-long programme designed to match skills to employment.
