WORK is to start on a new link road designed to reduce traffic in residential areas.
Construction on the £300,000 road in Horden is due to start on March 25 and is expected to last around 20 weeks.
The route will connect Blackhills Road and Kilburn Road, providing a direct link from the centre of Horden to the A1086 at Sea View roundabout.
Durham County Council says it hopes the link road will result in a significant reduction in traffic on residential roads in Horden as well as providing direct access from the A19 to the proposed East Durham train station.
Adrian White, head of transport and contract services, said: "The new road will take traffic away from residential areas in Horden making them safer and quieter for the people who live there.
"This is also a significant first step to providing improved rail facilities in east Durham and we would like to thank the residents of Horden for their patience while the work is on-going."
