THE Christmas tree at Durham County Council’s headquarters has been decorated by youngsters from across Europe.

As part of a project to foster closer links between young people throughout the continent, primary pupils have been busy making baubles and figures for the festive display at County Hall, Durham City.

The council’s chairman, Councillor Linda Marshall dressed the tree today (Wednesday, December 12).

She was helped by youngsters from some of the local schools that participated in the project and by youngsters from Kelloe Primary School.

More than 100 schools took part in the European Commission-supported project.

Among the County Durham participants were Pelton Primary School, The Grove Primary School, Consett and Hutton Henry CofE Primary School.

Coun Marshall said: “These handmade decorations really communicate the children’s excitement as well as their sense of where they come from.

“This year we have had wonderful decorations sent from Poland, Romania, Wales, Italy, Belgium and France.

“At this time of year, it is also a reminder of how communities across the world can come together in celebration.”

The project was developed by Europe Direct Llangollen, in Wales, and its sister organisation in the North- East, which is based at County Hall and staffed by Durham County Council’s international team.
