DARLINGTON residents have been warned to ensure their television can receive a digital signal in preparation for analogue services to be switched off this year.

As the countdown begins to digital TV switchover in September, figures show more than 4,600 Darlington residents are still watching analogue services.

Any television not converted after switchover, which takes place in two stages - on September 12 and September 26 - will no longer be able to receive programmes.

The process will also boost the digital signal to all 1.4million households in the TyneTees region.

A spokesman for Digital UK, the organisation leading switchover, said most TVs could be converted using a digital box, so it was not necessary to buy a new TV.

Older and disabled viewers can get assistance from the Switchover Help Scheme, run by the BBC.

John Askew, Digital UK regional manager for the North-East, said: "The benefits of switchover will be felt by hundreds of thousands of viewers who will be able to receive free-to-air digital TV via an aerial for the first time."
