A CRISIS support team is remaining open over the Easter bank holiday weekend to offer help to anyone struggling as a result of coronavirus.

Citizens Advice Darlington is open every day to help with queries over money, employment and accessing necessities.

The organisation says it has seen a significant upsurge in the number of people getting in touch with queries, particularly over employment and benefits.

Chief executive Helen Howson said: “We really want to get the message out there that we are open. I’m concerned there are people sat at home who think they can’t do anything and are really worried.

“We are all scared and confused to some extend. The CAB started during the Second World War and we are here now helping people to fight in a different way and we’re doing it through technology and remote working.

“The key message is that we are here to help people.”

She added: “We have seen a big upsurge in employment queries and people worried about basic necessities and things to do with COVID-19.

“It’s busy but we will get back to you.”

It offers a comprehensive telephone advice services and is helping to deliver the COVID 19 hardship and community support scheme, alongside Darlington Borough Council.

The crisis support scheme can help people with things like topping up gas and electricity, providing nappies and baby milk, phone top ups and basic emergency clothing.

Over the Easter weekend, it is available between 9am and 1pm each day.

The Benefit Assessment Action Team (BEAT) is available by calling 0800 048 7023.

It is available from 9.30am-4.30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 1pm-8pm on Wednesdays, and 9.30am-1pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

The service can also offer money advice and debt help, which is available by calling 01325 734994.

Ms Howson added: “We would recommend people get in touch at this point rather than ignoring problems because some of the options can disappear.

“Creditors and lenders are being flexible at the moment so we would urge people to get in touch.”
