A RESCUE dog who was found stray and heavily pregnant, has been recuperating at Dogs Trust Darlington, with her 11 puppies.

Six-year-old lurcher Phoenix gave birth to 11 puppies – have been named Chilli, Paprika, Nutmeg, Saffron, Dill, Pepper, Sage, Ginger, Mint, Sesame and Basil.

Sue Embleton, the trust’s rehoming centre manager at Darlington, said: “They say variety is the spice of life and right now we have a variety of little herbs and spices, who are finding families to give them a chance as part of a happy home.”

Last year, Dogs Trust Darlington rehomed 626 dogs, despite the centre undergoing a redevelopment, due for completion in July this year.

Mrs Embleton said: “We are very fortunate to have so many dedicated supporters that have helped make the Darlington centre’s refurbishment happen, including players of People’s Postcode Lottery, whose funding has formed a significant contribution. On its completion, it will include a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy pool where dogs can be aided in recovery if they have undergone surgery or have long-term mobility problems. There will also be a new training and play area where dogs can spend valuable time with their designated canine carers.”

Six years ago, People’s Postcode Lottery set out to support Dogs Trust in their vision to improve the dog welfare landscape in the UK and have a lasting impact for millions of dogs, including the thousands of dogs the charity cares for each year through its network of rehoming centres across the UK.
