MEMBERS of Darlington Green Party will be joined at the weekend by co-leader of the political group who is visiting the town ahead of the local elections.

Siân Berry will be visiting a number of venues across the town as members prepare to stand in the Darlington Borough Council elections on May 2.

Local campaigners are are hoping to build on national support for the party and secure seats on the borough council.

Matthew Snedker, local party coordinator said: “This visit by Siân is a ringing endorsement of all the hard work local members have been doing over the last four years. Green Party councillors will bring fresh ideas and independent scrutiny to our council.

"Too many bad decisions have been made over the years. Green Party councillors will be a constructive opposition that are free to speak up for local residents.”

The 44-year-old was the party's candidate in the 2008 London mayoral election, and again in the 2016 election, at which she came third.

She currently serves as a member of the London Assembly and the only Green Party councillor on Camden Council, representing Highgate.

The co-leader is expected to visit a selection of environmental venues and businesses during her visit as well as hosting a meeting to discuss the difference Green councillors can make to a town. She will share her experiences of serving as a councillor and a member of the London Assembly.

The party will be launching its campaign at the Peace Garden, Borough Road, at 10.45am on Saturday before canvassing on the afternoon.
