YOUNG students have used an opportunity to visit Auschwitz with their college to learn more about the Holocaust and anti-Semitism from those who understand it most.

Four teenagers studying A-level history at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College in Darlington travelled to the infamous Nazi concentration camp in Poland.

After arriving home, Lucy Jameson, Ami Lavan, Kion Sharma and Eleanor Wright manned a display and spoke to prospective students at open evenings about the trip before delivering presentations to their peers and the public at the college's Holocaust Memorial Day.

They also invited guest speaker Freddy Naftel into college who spent 90 minutes explaining to modern history students that his mother and grandparents fled Nazi Germany as refugees while both his great aunt and uncle died in Auschwitz.

Gary Darby, course leader for A-level history, said: "Freddy’s presentation was extremely powerful and touched everybody. Listening to somebody who was directly impacted by the Holocaust is very moving and we would like to thank Freddy for visiting the college and sharing his personal experiences with our students."
