LIAM HUGHES has signed for Gainsborough Trinity.

The 26-year-old has signed for the Lincolnshire club after telling Darlington he wanted to play for a club closer to home.

He made 24 appearances for Darlington, most of them in the centre of defence despite joining last summer to play in midfield.

It soon became evident, however, that he was not fit enough for the position, so manager Tommy Wright moved 6ft 4” Hughes to the back where he became an asset to the team.

He missed three games in January due to personal reasons, attending a clinic to deal with addiction issues, before making a triumphant return in Darlington’s 1-0 win at Blyth Spartans on February 4.

Hughes played another two games, at home to Southport and Brackley, but missed the last two – he was not among the substitutes on Tuesday at Telford – and has now dropped into the Northern Premier League.

Gainsborough are fifth in the Premier Division.

Darlington tomorrow travel to Hereford, and Hughes’ departure effectively assures Simon Ainge’s place in defence for the remainder of the season.
