RECORDS tumbled as around 400 pupils from a Darlington school took part in their annual swimming gala.

Nine school records were shattered as Hummersknott Academy students raced in the Dolphin Centre swimming pool in Darlington.

It was an especially rewarding day for Year 11 student Jack Hurworth, 16, who set new solo records in the butterfly, backstroke and freestyle, and helping to set a team record in the relay.

Nearly 40 races were staged, with none of the academy’s five colleges pulling ahead as the definite winner until the final race, leaving spectators and competitors in suspense as the results were tallied.

The atmosphere was tense as it was declared that the girls’ competition was won by Ketton College, while the boys’ competition went to Wyvern College.

Ketton College were named the overall champions, prompting wild cheers from their swimmers and supporters.

Mr Keating said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see the effort the students have put into this year’s swimming gala.”

He added: “We’ve seen some brilliant performances today, not just from the winners, but from everyone who has taken part and given it everything they’ve got. I couldn’t be prouder of the students, and I look forward to seeing how this affects the College Cup standings.

“I’d also like to thank the staff and students who worked very hard to make this event such a success, particularly our BTEC GCSE PE students, who ran the timings and competition administration as part of their coursework. They did an excellent job. Well done everyone.”
