THE doting owner of a 16-year-old Jack Russell are hoping to find volunteers to help give her walks and more freedom in her twilight years.

A national charity has stepped in a bid to recruit animal lovers able to devote a fraction of their free time to helping an elderly Darlington resident to look after their dog, Bonnie.

The Cinnamon Trust matches volunteers with people over retirement age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness by offering all kinds of pet care.

Bonnie the Jack Russell requires dog walking support to ensure she continues to get the exercise she needs.

Sally Collins, of The Cinnamon Trust, said: "A large number of elderly or ill pet owners become very worried about their ability to care for their pets, feeling that their only option is to rehome them, this is where our national network of dedicated volunteers step in to offer support enabling them to stay together."
