STAFF at Darlington Libraries Centre for Local Studies have been delving into its collection to discover treasures to share with visitors.

‘Darlington through the eyes of artists’ features a selection of oils, watercolours and sketches depicting views of the town that have inspired many artists over the years.

The pictures are interesting not only for their artistic merit but also because they offer a fascinating glimpse into how Darlington looked in days gone by.

Mandy Fay, senior library officer, said: “The Local Studies Collection includes many old photographs of Darlington and the surrounding area, but some of these paintings and sketches reveal what the area was like and how it has grown and developed prior to the days of photography and film.

“It’s a wonderful historical record of the town which we’re sure people will find fascinating.”

The ‘Darlington through the eyes of artists’ display will be on show until January 30.
