A "JOYOUS and heartbreaking" production revealing what lies hidden beneath the showmanship of the circus will take place in Darlington today.

Award winning performer and performance maker Ellie Dubois is bringing No Show for ages seven and over to The Hullabaloo in Darlington.

The show, which has been shortlisted for a theatre award, will give the audience the opportunity to see behind the flawless smiles and perfect execution of traditional circus performance.

Laura Case, executive director at Theatre Hullabaloo, said: “No Show demonstrates female strength, skill and power and puts them centre stage.

"It has a very strong and empowering message that will connect well with girls and young women in particular.”

Ms Dubois said: “Touring is the lifeblood of theatre and part of the circus tradition, so it is super exciting to be taking No Show across the UK and bringing contemporary circus to many different communities in diverse venues from theatres to village halls.

"At a time when sexual politics are being exposed in film, theatre and other art forms, it seems especially important that circus is also exploring its gender politics."

The Hullabaloo opened in December last year as a theatre venue for children and their families in Darlington.

Funded by Arts Council England and Darlington Borough Council, it includes a 150-seat studio theatre, family café, and creative play space.
