A BADMINTON club has launched a new era with a change of name after operating for 30 years.

Up to now, the Dolphin Premier Badminton Club has been for juniors only but it has now re-launched as an inclusive club, with all ages welcome.

Head coach Peter Walton explained: “We were running short of members, so we decided we had to move with the times and appeal to all ages. We’re getting more members as a result.”

Peter, who is a Level 3 coach, has been teaching badminton for 46 years and is also an international umpire. Now 77, he was still playing until recently and earned his living as a full-time professional coach for 40 years.

Born in Weardale, he lived in Darlington for many years and now lives at Aycliffe.

“Badminton has been my life,” he said. “It’s a great sport and our aim is to get more people enjoying it.”

The club, which is registered as a premier club with Badminton England, also has Level 2 and Level 1 coaches. Other officials include a welfare officer.

The club is based at the Dolphin Centre, operating on Saturdays between 2pm and 4pm in the main hall. The weekly fee is £3.20, paid at reception, and the first week is free. Annual membership costs £40 and includes a badged T-shirt.

Peter added: “We are very keen to attract new members, whether they want to be social players, or develop their skills so that they can take part in competitions. Everyone is welcome.”

A free open session is to be held on November 24 between 2pm and 4pm. For further information, contact Peter Walton on 07917095478.
