A RAILWAY museum is holding a family fun day to celebrate a special birthday.

On September 27 1825, George Stephenson was at the controls of Locomotion No 1 for the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, which symbolically pulled the world into the mass transport era of the railway age.

The museum will be hosting a special party on Sunday, September 30 between 10am and 4pm to mark the 193rd birthday of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, with free entry for all visitors.

A packed programme of entertainment has been lined up including storytelling, children’s entertainers, face painting, Victorian games, flea circus, magician, balloon modelling and stalls.

Cllr Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure and the local environment, said: “The opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway was an important date in our history and is something of which we are justifiably proud.

“As the Head of Steam is located on the original route, it is the ideal place to celebrate this important milestone in our history, and we hope families from across the borough will come along to join in the fun.”
