From Beethoven to Bacharach

Darlington Orchestra’s next concert takes place at the Dolphin Centre at 7.30pm on Saturday, July 7, at the Dolphin Centre. The special guest performers will be ‘noaddedsugar’, a lively community choir based in Staindrop.

“We are delighted to have been asked to appear with Darlington Orchestra and excited to be singing a wide range of music which includes Gospel, a John Rutter anthem and well-known pieces by Burt Bacharach and Elton John. Definitely something for everyone," says choir director Jane Ford.

Darlington Orchestra is a community group that performs two major concerts each year, in the winter and summer. Events are informal and accessible and always present an eclectic selection of classical music - this time the pieces range from Beethoven and from lively Hungarian folk tunes to a summery Gershwin medley. A printed programme with background details about all the pieces being performed is available free of charge to the audience; plus there is a version written specially for children in the audience aged five to 11 years.

Darlington Orchestra conductor David Plews says: “We’re all looking forward to presenting the laidback sounds of Gershwin contrasting with the profound depth of Beethoven, with many more musical styles in between. And we won't have done our job if we don't send the audience home humming some of the tunes. At this year’s summer concert, we are also welcoming talented Ukrainian violinist Iryna as leader of the orchestra while our long-term leader Angie takes a year out.”

Tickets are available from the Dolphin Centre reception, or online with booking fee at tinyurl.com/07July18. At the concert, there will be cash sales only for tickets (subject to availability).
