PLANS for a multi-million pound revamp of a railway station have gone on display to allow train users to give their feedback.

A £150m investment into Darlington’s Bank Top station was unveiled earlier this year, and details of the plans are now accessible to view at the station for people to view and comment on.

The plan, known as Darlington 2025, will feature a remodelling of the station as well as the creation of dedicated platforms for local connections and future high speed services.

The station will be at the heart of services connecting the East Coast mainline, and could also become an integral part of the Government’s HS2 network.

The Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) said the plans could result in thousands of new jobs and homes.

The display was launched earlier this week by Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen and Bill Dixon, leader of Darlington Borough Council and char of the Tees Valley Transport Committee.

The council and TVCA are hoping the regeneration will be supported from the Government’s national infrastructure fund, and when the plans were launched, they said they were confident they would be successful as they “demonstrate national importance.”

Mr Houchen said he would '"100 per cent" get behind the plans and push for funding from the fund.

"I want Darlington station to be a 21st century station that is fit for purpose to be the gateway for the Tees Valley."

Mr Houchen said he could not give a time for when any funding could be confirmed, but that the Tees Valley had a “very positive case".

“The government has already done a lot but there is a huge opportunity to do more.

“It is an investment in the area, in Darlington, and an investment for economic growth in the Tees Valley."

Cllr Dixon said he remained confident they had a "good case" for government funding.

“Initially there was some scepticism, but this is actually not an expensive project for transport infrastructure.

“The track will be at full capacity before 2025 – there will be no room – and we’ll be expecting loads of visitors in 2025 (for the 200th anniversary of Darlington as the birthplace of passenger railways).

“It is not just of importance for Darlington – it is for the region as a whole and for the nation," he added.

Chris Cunningham, general manager for Virgin Trains, which manages Darlington station, said: “We are supportive of the 2025 vision to transform Darlington station and its surrounding area, and were delighted to work with partners to create this room to help inform customers about the plans which are being developed.”

  • Anyone visiting the station will be asked to give their views on the plans by completing a questionnaire which will be located inside the station's ticket office.
