DANCE classes for those with dementia are being held in Darlington.

Research has shown that dance can help those living with dementia in a number of ways.

Dance classes can help to improve mood, memory and movement for those struggling with the condition, say experts.

Age UK Darlington have now launched a pilot series of dance classes for those with dementia.

Respected dance practitioner Jennifer Essex, also a lecturer at Teesside University, is leading the classes along with two of her students.

The first session took place last week and was attended by a number of people with dementia and their carers.

Gillian Peel, CEO of Age UK Darlington, said: “Jennifer and her student supporters were fantastic.

“They immediately put everyone at their ease and everyone had such a good time remembering and moving around.

“They all want to come back next week.”

The project, supported by Tees Valley Dance, will run for five weeks at Bradbury House on Beaumont Street West.

They will be held every Monday at 1.30pm throughout February.
