A THREE-day-old baby has become one of the youngest in the region to take the plunge and start swimming.

Oliver Joyeux, from Darlington, started swimming last week at a Water Babies swimming class.

The award-winning classes are designed to make the most of babies’ natural affinity with water, teaching confidence and safety using expert techniques.

His mother, Emma, said: “Both myself and my husband learnt to swim as children so we felt it important to start Oliver young, and as newborn babies are able to start straight away we just didn't want to delay his Water Babies adventure.

“So at three days old he became a water baby, loved it and he is definitely looking forward to his future lessons."

His swimming teacher said: “Swimming with your baby is a magical experience for both parent and child, allowing you some special one on one time to focus on each other in the relaxed environment that water provides.

“In addition to bonding benefits, studies have shown that participating babies have improved sleeping and eating patterns, thanks to the hidden physical workout received during the gentle class.”

Water Babies classes are available in Durham, Darlington, Newton Aycliffe, Brandon, Spennymoor, Bishop Auckland, Shotton and Northallerton.
