THE chairwoman of Hurworth Grange Senior Citizens' Club is leaving her post after 16 years.
Sylvia Whitehall, who is in her 80s, is leaving the village as her home, Linden Court, is being demolished.
The 33-room sheltered accommodation is being replaced by 20 flats for elderly people and 20 private apartments. Work is expected to start in the new year.
Mrs Whitehall is moving back to Heighington, where she is originally from. She was once secretary of Heighington Women's Institute.
"She ruled us with a rod of iron," said Betty Knowles, a member of the Hurworth club.
"But seriously, it is a good club and we all get on well. We will be sorry to see her go."
The new chairwoman will be Ann Simpson. The club meets once a month at Hurworth Grange Community Centre to hear a speaker or entertainment.
