A NATIONAL deafness charity has praised the work of a Middleton St George care home.
Action on Hearing Loss highlighted the work being done at St George’s Hall and Lodge in its new report, A World of Silence, which calls on the Care Quality Commission to introduce set standards to ensure that care homes fully support residents with hearing loss.
The St George’s Hall and Lodge home was commended for its special ‘hearing ambassadors’ who look for signs that residents have hearing loss.
Staff also complete deaf awareness training and can give basic hearing checks, while procedures such as changing seating arrangements so residents can lipread and using table cloths to dampen the sound of cutlery at mealtimes have also helped deaf residents.
