A GIRLS’ football team from a Darlington school have achieved their goal of becoming county champions.

The team from Longfield Academy played brilliantly to win the final of the Durham County Schools FA Girls’ Under-14s County Cup 10-1 against St Bede’s School, from Lanchester.

The trophy dates back to 1997 and Longfield is the first Darlington school to win it.

The team had qualified for the final in an amazing game against Cardinal Hume Catholic School, from Gateshead. The match finished 3-3 and was 5-5 after extra-time, before Longfield won with the last kick of the match in a penalty shoot-out.

Coach Lindsay Lees said: “The team members have shown fantastic teamwork and resilience and we hope they inspire younger pupils and encourage them to give football a go. Well done, team, we are so proud.”
