TWO men have been arrested in connection with three armed robberies.

The first took place at the Lonsdale pub on Lonsdale Terrace in Jesmond, Newcastle, on October 16 where a man threatened staff with a firearm.

Then on the morning of January 26 a man entered the Sainsbury’s, also Lonsdale Terrace, with a firearm and made off with cash.

A third armed robbery was also reported last Friday when a man entered the Waitrose, on Osborne Road, in Jesmond with his face covered and armed with a firearm.

He made off with a large quantity of cigarettes.

Enquiries to identify those responsible have been ongoing.

Officers executed a number of warrants earlier this week and two men, aged 25 and 58, were arrested in connection with all three robberies.

Detective Inspector Steve Byrne said: “These robberies are all very similar in nature and we are keeping an open mind about them being connected.

“Our detectives have been supported by local Neighbourhood Policing team to gather evidence, review CCTV and carry out house-to-house enquiries in the Jesmond area.

“Extra officers have been patrolling the area and we have been working hard to engage with businesses and reassure members of the local community.”
