A TEAM of shuttlecock footballers hope their international success will boost the sport.

The North-East team, which won the Hungarian Open and increased their European ranking, showcased their talents at County Hall, Durham, yesterday to recruit new players.

The team, which is based at Consett YMCA, includes Billy Robson, David Winter, Marcus Peart, Graeme Dodds, Kyle Holt and Joe Rowell.

Joe, 16, said: “Representing my country was the best experience of my life.”

In shuttlecock football, known as jianzi in China, where it originated, players have to keep the shuttlecock in the air for as long as possible, using only their feet, shoulders and chest.

Training sessions are held from 5pm to 6pm every Wednesday at Consett YMCA.
