MIDDLESBROUGH has missed out on its bid for city status to mark the Diamond Jubilee.
The town had been competing along with 25 others to win the accolade.
However, it has lost out to Chelmsford, in Essex, Perth, in Perthshire, and St Asaph, in Denbighshire.
The grant of city status, which is made by the Queen, is purely ceremonial. Cities enjoy no greater powers, functions or funding.
Middlesbrough made its bid last year in a process overseen by the Deputy Prime Minister's office.
